Trump Asks Apple to Rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" on Maps

US President Donald Trump has asked Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its mapping service, and the company may soon make the change, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said, Katharine Jackson and David Shepardson reported for Reuters.

Lake Ontario, one of North America's Great Lakes, is at the center of a US naming dispute after President Donald Trump ordered it renamed “Lake America” for federal purposes.

Trump announced recently that he was changing the name of the smallest of the five Great Lakes as part of an escalating trade dispute with Canada that has involved reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.

“The president reached out to Apple directly, so I'm sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon to Lake America,” Burgum said in an interview with Fox Business' “Mornings with Maria.”

The name change ordered by Trump applies to the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which establishes official geographic names used by the US government. It does not determine Canadian naming conventions or how the lake is identified in other countries.

Apple had not announced a change to the name on its maps at the time of the Reuters report. Google Maps, however, had already adopted “Lake America” for US users following the administration's action.
