In letters posted on social media, Trump called the tariffs a cornerstone of his 2024 campaign and part of efforts to "revive" the U.S. economy by correcting what he described as decades of unfair trade practices.

In his letter to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump acknowledged Mexico’s cooperation on migration and drug enforcement but said, “what Mexico has done is not enough.”

Trump accused the EU of perpetuating a lopsided relationship through tariff and non-tariff barriers, calling the U.S. trade deficit with the bloc a “national security threat.”

The move revives Trump’s aggressive trade policy, following a 90-day pause on earlier tariffs announced in April to allow for negotiations.
