White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is set to leave the administration just weeks after it was revealed he added a journalist to a Signal chat used to discuss military operations, two sources familiar with the matter told the Associated Press.

The move marks the first major staff shakeup of President Trump’s second term, according to Zeke Miller, Aamer Madhani, and Seung Min Kim.

Waltz faced intense scrutiny in March after it was revealed that he added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a private Signal group used to discuss plans for a sensitive March 15 military operation against Houthi militants in Yemen.

Far-right Trump ally Laura Loomer also targeted Waltz, reportedly telling Trump in the Oval Office that he needed to purge aides who, in her view, were not fully loyal to the "Make America Great Again" agenda.

Waltz’s deputy, Alex Wong, is also expected to depart, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity about a personnel move not yet made public. Waltz previously served three terms in the House representing Florida before joining the Trump administration.

His departure makes him the most prominent official to exit the White House since Trump began his second term. Trump had hoped to avoid the chaos that marked his first four years, which saw frequent turnover in top national security and White House positions.
