President Trump outlined plans to promote U.S. artificial intelligence development, including fast-tracking permits for building AI data centers and the power plants to support them, along with a strategy to export a wide array of AI-related products. The administration is taking a hands-off regulatory approach, Janet H. Cho and Liz Moyer reported for Barron’s Daily.

Silicon Valley’s biggest tech companies—including Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Amazon—are racing to build AI data centers, driving surging demand for computing infrastructure and placing added pressure on local electric grids.

Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang, AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su, and Palantir Technologies Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar were in the audience for Trump’s first major speech on AI policy.

Ed Mills, a Washington policy analyst at Raymond James, said the plan provides a road map that “pairs deregulation and investment with export control changes, while unlocking over $100 billion in unused financing capacity” via the Export-Import Bank and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to boost AI exports.

Public Citizen, a left-leaning advocacy group, criticized the plan to rapidly approve and deploy AI products and data centers “with no clear safeguards,” warning that it could result in “numerous sprawling, energy-hungry AI data centers without requiring environmental review or local input.”
