Trump’s Brazil Tariff Move Draws Attention to Amazon Deforestation

President Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned the severity of climate change and criticized environmental policies.

Deforestation has become part of a U.S. trade investigation tied to new tariffs on Brazil.

In a September 2025 speech before the United Nations, Trump reportedly described carbon footprint concerns as a “hoax” and criticized renewable energy policies, including wind power, Sasha Rogelberg reported for Fortune.

However, the administration launched an investigation this month into Brazil’s deforestation practices as part of Trump’s implementation of new tariffs tied to countries’ trade behavior.

Brazil contains roughly 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, a critical global carbon sink that absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide and helps mitigate climate change.

Legal deforestation — driven largely by cattle ranching and agricultural expansion — has cost Brazil an estimated 3.7 million acres annually.

Although Trump has not shifted his broader position on climate change, critics have noted the irony of his administration citing environmental concerns in trade enforcement.

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced a new wave of tariffs on dozens of trading partners under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, alleging failures to enforce bans on goods linked to forced labor.

The measures included an additional 12.5 percent tariff on Brazil, which the administration accused of maintaining trade practices that unfairly limit U.S. commerce, including ethanol market barriers, preferential tariff treatment, and illegal deforestation.
