President Donald Trump imposed an annual $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications — used by companies to hire skilled foreign workers — immediately rattling the tech industry, Fortune reported.

It’s a dramatic increase over existing program fees, which include $215 to register for the lottery and $780 for the petition.
Shares of major Indian tech services firms plunged sharply on Monday in response, while U.S. tech giants Google, Meta, and Microsoft — among the largest sponsors of H-1B visas — also slipped in premarket trading.
Around 73% of H-1B workers approved in fiscal year 2023 were Indian-born, according to the Pew Research Center. China ranked a distant second with 12% of approvals.
