Trump Urges Canadian Prime Minister to Address Wildfire Smoke Affecting U.S.

President Donald Trump said he urged Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to address the wildfire smoke drifting into the United States during their meeting at the FIFA World Cup Final, Joe Sommerlad reported for The Independent.

"It went good, but I told him, 'You've got to stop these fires from coming in and poisoning our air,'" Trump said of the conversation.

"Our air has been poisoned. I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but we've got to stop the fires up there. If we can help them, we'll help them. But maybe they should pay us some damages or something, or we should do some tariffs. But it was terrible. You had businesses closing," he added.

The wildfires reportedly began on July 6, when a summer thunderstorm triggered more than 1,000 lightning strikes across parts of Canada and northeastern Minnesota, igniting numerous fires in dry forests.

Smoke from the fires drifted south, affecting air quality across parts of the northeastern United States.

According to the report, at least 68,956 acres had burned as of July 21, with firefighters continuing efforts to contain the blazes.
