U.S. airlines spent nearly $6.5 billion on jet fuel in April, a sharp increase from a year earlier despite slightly lower fuel consumption, according to government data.

The figures show airline fuel spending climbed 78% year-over-year, up from approximately $3.6 billion in April 2025, as rising oil prices pushed operating costs higher.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, fuel consumption totaled 1.573 billion gallons, slightly below the 1.575 billion gallons recorded a year earlier.
The airline industry has faced mounting cost pressures amid disruptions to oil supplies linked to instability in the Middle East and reduced shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, airlines worldwide have raised fares, reduced services, added fees, and adjusted flight schedules to offset higher fuel expenses.
