The Biden administration has turned its focus to combat the threat of fentanyl trafficking, announcing indictments and sanctions against Chinese companies and executives accused of importing the chemicals used in the production of the deadly drug, as reported by Fatima Hussein and Eric Tucker for the Associated Press (AP).

Officials characterized these actions as part of their ongoing efforts to address the most lethal overdose crisis.
Officials characterized these actions as part of their ongoing efforts to address the most lethal overdose crisis, including charges against eight Chinese companies involved in advertising, manufacturing, and distributing precursor chemicals used in synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
These developments come on the eve of meetings between administration officials and Mexican counterparts, where discussions related to the drug threat are anticipated.
Attorney General Merrick Garland, speaking at a news conference, stated, "We know that this network includes the cartels’ leaders, their drug traffickers, their money launderers, their clandestine lab operators, their security forces, their weapons suppliers, and their chemical suppliers."
In addition to the charges against eight companies, the Justice Department also indicted 12 executives for their alleged roles in drug trafficking.
Simultaneously, the Treasury Department announced sanctions against 28 individuals and entities, primarily in China but also in Canada.
These sanctions will result in their exclusion from the U.S. financial system and the prohibition of any U.S. business transactions with them. While none of the indicted individuals have been apprehended, Garland emphasized that prosecutors are committed to bringing all defendants to justice.
