US-Canada relations, already tense, faced another setback after the United States imposed a ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian imports, including alcoholic beverages, certain dairy products and motorcycles, Paul Wiseman and Rob Gillies reported for The Associated Press (AP).

The ban amounts to a small share of the roughly $880 billion in annual two-way trade between the two countries, but it represents another escalation in President Donald Trump’s second-term trade measures against Canada.

Trade attorney Patrick Childress said the move would not help ease tensions between the two countries.

The latest dispute followed Trump’s use of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose restrictions on certain Canadian products.

The United States Trade Representative said the administration’s actions were intended to respond to what it characterized as discriminatory Canadian measures against US commerce.

The ban took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

The economic impact is expected to be limited because many of the affected products were already subject to high tariffs.

Jacob Jensen, director of trade policy at the American Action Forum, estimated that the restrictions cover about $967 million worth of Canadian imports based on 2025 figures.

About 87% of that amount consists of alcoholic beverages.

The restrictions also cover certain dairy products, including whey, as well as motorcycles. The US action follows retaliatory measures imposed by Canada in response to earlier US tariffs.
