US employers posted 8.7 million job openings in October, the fewest since March 2021, signaling a cooling in hiring despite remaining at a healthy pace in the face of higher interest rates, reported Paul Wiseman for the Associated Press (AP).

Despite the drop, job openings remain historically high, surpassing 8 million for 32 consecutive months, a threshold never reached before 2021.
The Labor Department's report on Tuesday indicated a significant drop from 9.4 million job openings in September.
Layoffs were up modestly in October, and the number of Americans quitting their jobs, often reflecting confidence in finding better opportunities, saw a slight decrease. The decline in job openings was particularly notable in healthcare and social assistance, finance, and the hospitality sector.
However, despite the drop, job openings remain historically high, surpassing 8 million for 32 consecutive months, a threshold never reached before 2021.
