U.S. Poised To Ship Huge Number Of Abrams Tanks To Ukraine

The US is "leaning toward" sending a significant number of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine, US officials have told The Wall Street Journal, Maighna Nanu reported for The Telegraph.

Photo Insert: Berlin previously said it will only allow the export of Leopards if the US also supplies its own Abrams tanks to Ukraine.

An announcement on the deliveries is expected to come as soon as this week despite earlier statements from Pentagon officials insisting that the Abrams M1 tanks are complicated equipment that will require several months before Ukrainians master its systems.

The move by the Biden administration will pile further pressure on Germany to agree to send its own Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine or grant re-export licenses to allies.

Berlin previously said it will only allow the export of Leopards if the US also supplies its own Abrams tanks to Ukraine.

The French are also sending their Leclerc tanks to Ukraine after shipping light tanks, armored fighting vehicles and dual-purpose bombs that can be fired from howitzers to hit two tanks with one round.
