In Moscow, a foreign ministry spokeswoman confirmed Russia had sent diplomatic notes to the US and other nations about supplying weapons to Ukraine but did not say what the messages contained, Interfax news agency reported.
"We call on the United States and its allies to stop the irresponsible militarization of Ukraine, which implies unpredictable consequences for regional and international security," the Post quoted Russia saying in a note to the US.
However, Lauren McCarthy of the New York Times said the notes were not signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin or senior officials. It was an indicator, one administration official said, that the weapons sent by the US so far were having an effect.
It also suggested that the Russians were concerned about the sophisticated weaponry that is part of a new $800 million US package.
Other officials said it was Russia that attacked Ukraine, which is now busy defending itself by sinking Russian warships, knocking out warplanes, and destroying tanks and missile batteries brought in by Moscow.
In Ukraine, the military said that Russian forces were using long-range bombers to attack Mariupol in an effort to seize complete control of the southern port city while in Russia, the state media airs clips of prime-time Fox News segments, opinion pieces, and online comments section to reinforce the Kremlin’s messaging about the war.
