Kirby cited the increasing attacks by Russians, using North Korean ballistic missiles, and emphasized the acute need for assistance, particularly during the winter months.
The latest tranche of military aid to Ukraine, totaling $250 million, was announced by the US Department of Defense on December 27th. However, the aid package faced obstacles in the US Senate due to Republican demands for stricter migration policies, leading to its failure to pass a procedural vote on December 6.
President Joe Biden had urged urgent approval to avoid sending American troops to fight against the Russians.
The suspension of military aid raises concerns about the impact on Ukraine's ability to counter Russian aggression. The decision is contingent on Congress, and further assistance will depend on their deliberations.
