Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston performed the groundbreaking four-hour surgery on March 16. The patient, Richard Slayman, is recovering well, while the pig donor is deceased.
Slayman had previously received a human kidney transplant in 2018 but had to resume dialysis after the organ failed. Experts are closely monitoring the long-term outcomes of this animal-to-human transplant, emphasizing its potential to address organ shortages.
