A court-appointed monitor declared challenger Shawn Fain the winner over incumbent Ray Curry.
Fain’s slate of candidates won control of the big union, as workers rejected most incumbents in the wake of a bribery and embezzlement scandal, Adrian Sainz and David Koenig also reported for AP.
Fain’s party won seven out of the 14 seats on the UAW board of directors, with an independent member siding with the new president. Curry complained about irregularities in the election, but his plea was rejected, leading to Fain’s winning by nearly 500 votes. Curry eventually conceded.
