Kiev's Mayor Vitali Klitschko held an event in memory of the many people who, at the cost of their own health and lives, “had to fight the consequences of the technical catastrophe."
More than 600,000 people helped deal with the effects of the accident, for instance putting out fires and clearing debris.
More than 48,000 people who were affected by the nuclear catastrophe live in Kiev today, including relocated people and so-called liquidators. On the occasion of the anniversary, each received a payment of between $20 and $35. Broadcasters across the country showed images of a commemorative candle.
The explosion of bloc four of the former Soviet nuclear power station Chernobyl in April 1986 is considered the greatest civil nuclear catastrophe. Thousands of people were injured or killed, tens of thousands had to be relocated. Due to the radioactive radiation, the area around the nuclear ruin was blocked.
