India reported its highest single-day casualty figure of 6,148 on Thursday due to COVID-19 with the sudden spike brought on by a revision of figures by the eastern state of Bihar, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

Usually, every morning, there is a report stating the number of people who have died of COVID-19 during the past 24 hours. Thursday’s numbers, however, included 3,951 deaths from Bihar after the state government completed a 20-day exercise to audit all possible COVID-19 deaths.

Previously, the Patna High Court had flagged irregularities in the tallies provided by different government agencies, amid suggestions that the true figures were being concealed.

The verification exercise looked at the numbers of COVID-19 victims registered at crematoriums and burial grounds.

They also included people who had died after recovering from related complications or while on their way to the hospital, India Today news channel reported.

Bihar's death toll jumped from 5,424 on June 7 to 9,375 on June 8. Nationwide, India logged 94,052 cases on Thursday, down from a peak of 400,000 daily cases in early May. Its highest daily death toll, of was 4,529, was recorded on May 18.
