The Chinese manufacturing version is projected to go on sale in the second part of 2023. Volkswagen also intends to begin manufacture of a European series model in Emden in 2023.
“With the ID.AERO show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometers, an extraordinary amount of space, and a premium interior,” says Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
The concept vehicle is about five meters long and was created using aerodynamic concepts. The roof slopes gracefully to the back in coupé form, contributing to the superb drag coefficient of 0.23.
Volkswagen's modular electric drive matrix (MEB) also allows for minimal overhangs, a long wheelbase, and an extremely roomy vehicle interior.
The ID.AERO is powered by a large lithium-ion battery with a net energy capacity of 77 kWh. The ID. is possible due to the interplay of the efficient driving system and the superb aerodynamic qualities. AERO has a range of up to 620 kilometers, making it ideal for long distance travel.
Volkswagen is ramping up its electric offensive in China as part of its ACCELERATE plan, which includes the ID.AERO concept car. The production version of the ID.AERO will be China's fourth fully-electric model series, with a release date in the second half of 2023. There are two variants planned, one for each Volkswagen joint venture.
Volkswagen's regional plan calls for the company to become China's leading supplier of environmentally-friendly vehicles. It is expected that by 2030, at least every second vehicle sold in China would be an electric vehicle.
