The United Auto Workers (UAW) union disclosed that the Detroit Casino Council (DCC), representing workers at the MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood at Greektown, and MotorCity casinos, reported a 99% "yes" vote on Friday to authorize a strike at all three locations if a new contract agreement cannot be reached.
According to a statement from the DCC, strikes could be called for as early as mid-October when the current contracts expire.
The Detroit Casino Council comprises five unions representing casino employees, which include UNITE HERE Local 24, UAW, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.
This announcement comes as labor unions leverage the low unemployment rate to advocate for higher wages and improved working conditions in their negotiations for new labor agreements.
