As part of the launch of their new leak-proof underwear collection, global sports company PUMA and leak-proof apparel company Modibodi® commissioned a worldwide survey that investigated why girls are dropping out of sports; shedding light on a number that really matters.

Sports is all about numbers. And when it comes to celebrating sports, goals scored and games won are the statistics that are highlighted. But there is a number less recognized by spectators: the girls who drop out of sports daily, out of shame and fear of leaks.
The statistics unearthed were shocking, with 1 in 2 teenagers dropping out of sports due to menstruation, as per a Business Wire report. Worldwide research by PUMA and Modibodi® found that for many girls, sport is stopped in the face of embarrassment, pain, or fear of leakage during menstruation.
Research information shows how culture and lack of innovation around menstruation prevent girls from playing sports. The discomfort of disposable products associated, from the coach's point of view to the lack of education and training, made the players realize that the fear of leaking psychologically impacted their sports performance.
With the subject of menstruation undiscussed in the sporting world, Australian PUMA athlete and AFL Collingwood star Sabrina Frederick made a point of breaking the stigma:
"I was one of those who stayed in the sport. But for many girls, this is not a Reality. Periods shouldn't stop girls from playing sports. These are numbers we need to address, to keep girls in sports longer."
Ali Riley, PUMA athlete from New Zealand and captain of Football Ferns, said: " It's time to break the silence and help women and girls stay comfortable and active during menstruation. What's fantastic about the PUMA x Modibodi active underwear collection is that it was specifically designed to help make playing sports more possible than ever during menstruation."
The PUMA x Modibodi collection replaces the need for disposable pads, liners, and tampons while you play. Modibodi's proprietary Modifier Technology™ wicks moisture and sweat, locks in fluids and odors, and keeps you dry and feeling fresh without the discomfort of disposables.
"3 in 5 teens stop playing sports due to fear of leaking or revealing their period, which is why we are excited to launch this collection with PUMA and together normalize menstruation and fight the stigma that women cannot be active on their periods or when they experience any of life's natural leaks," said Kristy Chong, Executive Director and Founder of Modibodi
"Our data also shows that 1 in 2 feel discomfort with disposable menstrual products such as pads and tampons when playing sports or exercising - so by launching this line of leak-proof underwear, we hope to make sports your period more comfortable, more protected, and more possible than ever before. Transforming the world should be as easy as changing your underwear. Protection with no waste, no leaks, and no worries."
Under the "She Moves Us" platform, PUMA, together with Modibodi, believes that everyone who wants to participate in exercise or sports should be given the opportunity to stay active and play.
"3 out of 4 women believe menstruation needs to be discussed more openly in the sports world, which is why we are proud to partner with Modibodi to clarify these numbers that really matter in sports," said Erin Longin, Global Director of PUMA Racing and Training Business Unit. "As a global brand, we felt it was important to do our part to solve this problem."
As part of the launch, PUMA and Modibodi will work with PUMA's "She Moves Us" charity partner "Women Win" to donate packs to 500 girls and women in need. "Menstruation poverty is a big issue worldwide, but it's not talked about enough. Making sustainable menstrual products widely available is something that urgently needs to be addressed, which is why I'm so proud to be part of the PUMA x cooperation Modibodi," said Jodie Williams, British sprinter and PUMA athlete.
The PUMA x Modibodi collection consists of 3 styles of active underwear: thongs, briefs, and shorts, designed to suit every body. Each style is available in two colors: dark slate and burgundy, and to maximize comfort while playing sports, it includes a unique 3mm reinforcement with Modibodi's scientifically-proven absorbent Modifier Technology™.
With a wider waistband to ensure safety during play and airy side edges designed for comfort and maximize airflow, the PUMA x Modibodi Active Underwear range gives women and girls the ability to stay active without having to worry about leaks, reducing the monthly waste of menstrual products.
