No health issues have been reported, but the company, a subsidiary of retail giant Aeon Co., halted sales of onigiri rice balls and bento lunches on August 9 and other deli items starting Monday.

“We sincerely apologize to customers who purchased handmade onigiri and bento, as well as other concerned parties, for the significant inconvenience caused,” Ministop said in a statement.

The company found some employees extended expiry times by delaying labels by one to two hours, while others replaced stickers with false dates.

Ministop operates 1,818 stores nationwide as of July, though it trails far behind market leader Seven-Eleven, which has more than 21,000 outlets. Misconduct was uncovered at 23 stores across Tokyo, Saitama, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, and Fukuoka prefectures.
