91-Year-Old German Woman Unknowingly Grows Cannabis

A 91-year-old woman discovered on Sunday that she had been unwittingly growing a hashish plant on her balcony in a home for the elderly in the southern German region of Swabia, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

Photo Insert: It was only after some persuasion and several explanations that the senior citizen, who had been nurturing the plant and had gotten attached to it, agreed to hand it over.

An employee of the home in the Swabian town of Krumbach in Bavaria alerted the police after noticing a suspicious-looking plant.

"The resident was stunned, as she did not know the name of the plant and did not know about a ban on its cultivation," the police said on Monday.

"However, as she liked the plant and had been nurturing it for some time, she did not agree to it being seized by the officers."

It was only after some persuasion and several explanations that the senior citizen agreed to hand over the plant. It is not known how the 91-year-old came to have the seeds.

She will not be getting her beloved plant back, though, as it will be destroyed for being a narcotic, an official said on Monday.
