Battleground States Face Key Secretary of State Races Ahead of 2028 Election
Voters in several battleground states will decide next month who will hold key election oversight responsibilities ahead of the next presidential contest.

Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Nevada—all important battlegrounds in recent national elections—have secretary of state races on the ballot.
These offices, once relatively low-profile, have drawn increased attention amid repeated, unsubstantiated election-fraud claims by President Donald Trump and his allies, Jane C. Timm reported for NBC News.
Secretary of state races drew particular national attention in 2022 following Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
During that election cycle, Democrats spent more than $71 million on advertising for secretary of state races nationwide, while Republicans spent nearly $15 million, according to AdImpact data cited in the report.
Spending is lower this year across the 26 secretary of state races on the ballot.
Democratic campaigns and outside groups have spent $16.6 million on advertising, compared with more than $5 million by Republicans, according to the figures cited in the report.
Attention is once again focused on closely divided battleground states that could play an important role in the 2028 presidential election.
In Arizona and Nevada, Democratic incumbents are running against Republican challengers who have promoted election-related conspiracy theories.
Meanwhile, open-seat contests in Georgia and Michigan have attracted
Republican candidates who describe themselves as moderates seeking to build public trust. Democrats have criticized them as allies of Trump who could undermine confidence in elections.
