President Joe Biden announced that he will be ending his presidential re-election campaign. It follows growing demands from senior Democrats that he drop out as polls showed him increasingly unlikely to beat Donald Trump in an election, Matthew Chapman reported for Raw Story.

Until today, Biden had defiantly stated he wasn't going anywhere, blaming the calls to quit the race on a small circle of "elites" who want him eliminated.
But doubts surged following the president's low-energy debate with Trump in Atlanta last month, which ultimately led to a steady stream of Democratic officeholders in Congress calling on the president to exit the race and leave his legacy untarnished.
Party leaders are pushing Vice President Kamala Harris to take Biden’s place while others are vouching for Hillary Clinton to take another stab at the presidency and avenge her loss to Trump in 2016 due to the workings of the anachronistic Electoral College.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly advised Biden to consider stepping down in private conversations. Biden said he will focus on fulfilling his term as US president.
The New York Times, which led a gaggle of media outlets asking Biden to quit, said the president’s announcing through social media will unsettle the presidential race as he did not name his preferred replacement.
Boston Globe said the panic of Democrats that they will lose in November emboldened party leaders to persuade Biden to quit. Raw Story later reported that Biden has endorsed Harris to take his place.
