Blanche Says Administration Will Comply With Supreme Court Mail-Ballot Ruling

Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Trump administration would comply with the Supreme Court’s latest ruling on federal mail-ballot requirements, while indicating that efforts to change mail-voting rules could continue beyond the 2026 midterm elections.

“We’re going to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision, as we always do,” Blanche told reporters at the White House.

He nevertheless said President Donald Trump’s efforts concerning election administration would continue after the November election. “President Trump’s efforts to make sure that we have free and fair elections are not going to stop just in November or after or thereafter,” Blanche said.

The Supreme Court’s ruling prevented the administration’s federal mail-ballot requirements from taking effect for the 2026 election.

The court’s order involved provisions of Trump’s executive order that sought to impose new federal requirements on mail ballots and give the federal government a greater role in their processing.

Blanche also defended Trump’s criticism of the justices who ruled against the administration.

He said Trump was “very frustrated” with the decision and argued that the president had the right to express his views about the Supreme Court.

The ruling does not necessarily end the administration’s efforts to pursue changes to mail voting. CNN reported that Blanche left open the possibility of continued efforts before the 2028 presidential election, although he did not specifically announce a new proposal or timetable.

Trump has previously received significant Supreme Court victories, including the court’s 2024 ruling recognizing broad presidential immunity for official acts. The court has also issued rulings affecting the administration's other policies during his second term.
