Trump Approval Rating Falls in 7 of 8 States Canada Targeted

President Donald Trump's net approval rating declined in seven of the eight states that Ontario Premier Doug Ford had urged Canada to target with additional tariffs because of their political importance to Trump's political base, according to Civiqs tracking cited by Newsweek.

The changes were measured between Aug. 22, when US-Canada trade negotiations collapsed and new 50% US tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports, and Sept. 16.

The movements in approval ratings do not establish that the trade dispute caused voters to turn against Trump.

Ford had identified Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Texas and Wisconsin as states that should face additional Canadian retaliatory tariffs because of their political importance to the Trump administration's base.

The figures cited by Newsweek included 130,338 responses through Sept. 15, 2026.

Because the tracker is continuously updated, the numbers represent measurements during the specified period rather than a single nationwide poll conducted on one day.

Arkansas remained above water in the latest reading, but its net approval margin narrowed from 12 percentage points on Aug. 22 to seven points.

Approval fell from 53% to 50%, while disapproval rose from 41% to 43%.

Florida's net rating declined from -9 to -14, with 40% approving and 54% disapproving.

Montana moved from a net approval rating of +4 to 0, with approval and disapproval both at 46%. Alabama's rating declined from +7 to +4, while Wisconsin moved from -16 to -19. Missouri and Texas each recorded a two-point deterioration in net approval.

The latest figures left Trump with negative net approval in five of the eight states: Texas at -26, Wisconsin at -19, Florida at -14, Iowa at -12 and Missouri at -11.

The Civiqs figures show changes in voter sentiment during a period that also included developments beyond the US-Canada trade dispute. They therefore cannot determine whether tariffs, economic conditions, political events or other factors caused the movement.
