Boeing desperately needs a superstar with a totally different profile from its last several leaders to recast its production processes and regain its record of safety excellence, reported Shawn Tully for Fortune.

CEO Dave Calhoun will step down at year-end, while Stan Deal, head of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes division, is leaving the company. Current chairman Larry Kellner will retire, to be replaced by Boeing director and ex-Qualcomm chief Steve Mollenkopf.

The choice between naming an insider or an outsider is a tough call. Some argue for a Boeing veteran due to the industry's complexity, while others insist on an outsider for a hard reset.
