The financing will support Anthropic's leasing of computing capacity based on Broadcom's tensor processing units, or TPUs.

The $42 billion arrangement represents about one-third of Anthropic's five-year, $125.2 billion commitment for computing capacity.

The arrangement gives Broadcom a particularly important role in Anthropic's infrastructure expansion. By 2027, Anthropic is expected to become Broadcom's largest customer in its chip-design business, according to Reuters.

The relationship extends beyond supplying computing equipment.

Broadcom is also providing financing that allows Anthropic to fund the infrastructure it needs as it expands its AI operations.

The arrangement illustrates how AI companies and semiconductor manufacturers are increasingly using financing agreements to support enormous investments in computing capacity.

The scale of the commitments has raised questions among investors about whether AI companies will generate enough revenue to support the infrastructure spending and financing now being put in place.
