The Economist reported on July 18, 2022 that as many as 900 million Chinese have endured record temperatures and more than 80 cities have issued heat warnings as the dog days of summer, snafu, roast Chinese industries and force people to spend the day in air-conditioned rooms to escape the heat.

Some energy-intensive factories in Zhejiang province, a key manufacturing hub in the east, have been subject to power rationing. On July 13th, thermometers in the region reached approximately 42°C. Given the humidity, this feels more like 54 degrees Celsius.

China's policymakers fear a repetition of last year's energy shortage due to the scorching heat. As energy providers failed to fulfill demand, a number of factories were forced to close and several homes faced blackouts.

This time, the authorities have committed to prevent shortages. However, the upheaval in global energy markets brought on by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Chinese government's ambitious emission objectives add to the complexity.
