Contract Talks Between Hollywood Actors And Studios Break Down

Negotiations between Hollywood studios and the SAG-AFTRA actors' union were abruptly halted this week as the two sides clashed over streaming revenue, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), and other issues at the heart of a three-month work stoppage, Lisa Richwine reported this for Reuters.

The breakdown in talks disrupted efforts to resolve labor tensions that have halted most US-based film and television production, costing the California economy billions and leaving thousands of crew members without work.

SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July. The union resumed negotiations with studios last week after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) ended its work stoppage.

Hopes for a swift resolution with actors were raised following the WGA deal, but the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced late on Wednesday that talks were suspended once they reviewed the most recent union proposal.

The AMPTP, representing companies such as Netflix, Walt Disney, and others in the media industry, stated, "After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and discussions are no longer moving us in a productive direction.
