In a statement obtained by CNN, Ginsburg's family stated that the foundation had strayed from the original mission of the award and from what Justice Ginsburg stood for.

The family emphasized that they were not affiliated with the award and called the choices of honorees this year an "affront" to the memory of Justice Ginsburg.

They supported a letter written by Trevor Morrison, a former Ginsburg clerk, which stated that not all recipients of the award reflected the values to which the Justice dedicated her career.

Justice Ginsburg, known for her liberal views and progressive rulings on major social issues, consistently advocated for causes such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and immigration.

The family's criticism comes amidst controversy surrounding the inclusion of Musk and Murdoch, as well as other recipients like Martha Stewart, Sylvester Stallone, and Michael Milken.
