The Gannett and McClatchy news chains, encompassing over 230 outlets such as USA Today and the Miami Herald, have announced plans to discontinue their use of journalism from the Associated Press (AP), according to David Bauder for AP.

This decision, driven by ongoing financial pressures in the news industry, marks the end of a century-old partnership between Gannett and AP.

Gannett's spokeswoman stated that ceasing the use of AP content would enable further investment in their newsrooms. A memo from Gannett's chief content officer instructed editors to halt the use of AP stories, videos, and images.

Following Gannett's decision, McClatchy also informed AP of its intention to drop the service.

Both Gannett and McClatchy have faced financial challenges, with Gannett experiencing workforce reductions and financial losses, while McClatchy underwent ownership changes through bankruptcy proceedings.
