Thousands of employees across U.S. federal health agencies have been notified that they had been officially terminated, following a Supreme Court decision earlier this month, CNN reported, via Rene Marsh, Meg Tirrell, and Tami Luhby.

The affected workers—many of whom were originally informed of impending layoffs on April 1—received an email from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) stating: “You are hereby notified that you are officially separated from HHS at the close of business on July 14, 2025.”
The layoffs had been delayed by a legal battle that culminated in the Supreme Court’s July 8 ruling, which, according to the HHS email, “permits the agency to move forward with a portion of its reduction in force.”
HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon confirmed the move, saying, “HHS previously announced our plans to transform this department to Make America Healthy Again, and we intend to do just that.”
The reorganization, first announced on March 27, includes the elimination of 10,000 jobs across several agencies—including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
While some employees have since been reinstated, thousands were officially terminated Monday. A subset of those initially affected remains temporarily protected under an ongoing court case, New York v. Kennedy, and will not be separated at this time.
