The death toll in flash floods triggered by torrential rain Sunday in eastern Indonesia has risen to 55 with 40 others still unaccounted for, according to National Disaster Mitigation Agency figures released Monday, according to Kyodo News Agency.

The toll may increase with Gov. Viktor Laiskodat of East Nusa Tenggara, the province where the natural disaster occurred, quoting information he received from the field that over 100 people have been killed.
Torrential rain has also caused damage in neighboring East Timor, killing 21 people, Reuters news agency reported. The rain has left parts of the country's capital Dili underwater and without power.
According to the Indonesian agency, 44 people were killed in East Flores Regency and 11 others in Lembata Regency, with 40 others missing in the two regencies in the same province.
Hundreds of people were displaced by the floods, the agency said, adding that most of those killed were buried under mud carried by the floods. The mud also covered dozens of houses.
Earlier Saturday, the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency had predicted extreme weather for the coming week in some parts of central and eastern Indonesia, which is transitioning from a rainy season to a dry season.
