Japan Has 90,000 New COVID Cases

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, Japan's new COVID-19 cases surpassed 90,000 for the first time since February 17, according to official data, as public health experts stated the highly transmissible BA.5 subvariant of Omicron is generating a seventh wave of infections, according to Mainichi Japan.

The 94,493 cases are close to the country's peak of almost 104,000 cases in February. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 16,878 coronavirus cases, exceeding 10,000 for the second day in a row and more than double from a week ago. Osaka Prefecture also recorded 10,452 cases, breaking the 10,000-mark for the first time since February 26.


Shigeyuki Goto, Japan's health minister, stated during a meeting of an expert group that the government expects new infections to increase in many areas of the country.



According to data from the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, the number of coronavirus infections on Tuesday increased 2.14 times over the previous week. "We would like the people to fully take measures to prevent infections such as mask wearing," Goto said at the meeting.


According to government officials, the government plans to set up infection checkpoints at major airports and train stations around Japan from August 5 to 18, including the Bon summer holiday period in mid-August.

According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, the BA.5 subvariant is responsible for roughly 80% of current illnesses, but it will be responsible for 100% of cases by the first week of August.


Record one-day illnesses were documented in 12 prefectures out of 47, including Okinawa with 3,518, Shizuoka with 2,195, Kagoshima with 1,579, Wakayama with 630, and Iwate with 597.

Aichi reported 6,364 instances, breaking the 6,000-mark for the second day in a row. Hyogo reported 4,158 infections, breaking the 4,000-mark for the first time since February 26.
