The billionaire Lin Qi, a devoted fan of “The Three-Body Problem,” harbored ambitious plans to bring his beloved Chinese sci-fi novel to screens worldwide, including TV, cinema, and video games.

Following the successful listing of his gaming firm in 2014, Lin envisioned transforming China’s revered sci-fi trilogy into a global cultural phenomenon akin to “Star Wars,” as reported by Nectar Gan for CNN.
A decade later, Lin would have been closer to realizing his vision with the debut of a Netflix adaptation of the Hugo Award-winning book, attracting millions of viewers globally.
However, the billionaire instrumental in making the show a reality tragically did not live to witness its success.
Lin, credited as an executive producer in the opening credits of “3 Body Problem,” was poisoned and killed at the age of 39, according to Chinese authorities, mere months after Netflix announced its plans for the series in 2020.
The perpetrator turned out to be one of Lin’s own executives, a prominent lawyer who had facilitated Lin’s Yoozoo Games in acquiring the rights to adapt the acclaimed trilogy.
Following a falling out with his employer, Xu Yao presented Lin with a bottle of what he claimed were probiotic pills. Unbeknownst to Lin, the pills contained a lethal cocktail of toxins procured from the dark web.
Media accounts of the meticulously orchestrated murder have captivated China, drawing parallels online to the American crime drama “Breaking Bad.”
Chinese media reports detailed the elaborate scheme, involving the experimentation with over 100 poisons in a makeshift lab. Xu was sentenced to death for murder by a Shanghai court on March 22, the day following the highly anticipated premiere of “3 Body Problem” on Netflix.
