With the help of a locksmith, a pigeon was freed from a vacant shop in Germany's Ruhr area after almost a week, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

Since Monday, residents and animal welfare activists in the town of Oberhausen in the state of North Rhine Westphalia had repeatedly contacted the police and fire brigade asking for the animal to be rescued, the police announced on Saturday.
After they were unable to find an owner or caretaker, the locksmith was finally called in.
The captured animal was taken into the care of a pigeon welfare association.
