MAN IN WESTERN JAPAN DEVELOPS BRAIN DISEASE FROM COVID, OFFICIALS SAY

A company employee in his 50s in the western Japan prefecture of Wakayama who has the new coronavirus was diagnosed with encephalopathy, a brain disease, brought on by the virus, prefectural officials claimed on August 1, 2020, Tatsu Shingu wrote for Mainichi Shimbun.

Officials said on July 31 that the brain disease was found in the man after it was noticed he was acting strangely.

According to the prefectural government, there have been cases of patients developing meningitis after being infected with the novel coronavirus, but instances of brain disease are said to be rare.

The man was confirmed to have the virus that causes COVID-19 on July 21, and on July 27 he was reported to have started acting strangely, such as by shouting and other behavior. His condition is now improving.
