Mark Carney has already made history as the first person to become prime minister of Canada without having previously held political office.

On Monday, he will attempt another remarkable feat — leading the Liberal Party to a fourth consecutive election victory, a result that seemed unlikely just months ago, Derek Decloet reported for Bloomberg News.
Polling suggests he is poised to succeed, thanks largely to his personal popularity in Ontario and Quebec, home to 60% of Canadians.
The campaign’s unexpected momentum comes down, in part, to Donald Trump. The more chaos the U.S. president generates, the more it appears to help the Liberals, with Carney — the grey-haired former central banker — positioning himself as a reassuring figure for a nervous nation.
In his speeches, Carney frames Trump’s aggressive foreign policy as a reason Canada needs a steady, independent leader.
As a result, Carney enjoys a 10-point lead over Conservative Pierre Poilievre on the question of who would be the better prime minister, according to a recent survey. However, governing will bring challenges.
Negotiations with the Trump White House are expected to be difficult, and efforts to build stronger trade and security alliances with Europe and Asia will be complex. Moreover, Carney faces skepticism from large swathes of the country, not only from conservative-leaning areas in Canada’s prairies.
