Mercedes-ultra-efficient Benz's VISION EQXX electric car completed a 750-mile (1,200 km) trip between Germany and the United Kingdom on a single charge, defeating Elon Musk's Tesla and China's homegrown Electric Vehicles (EVs), Fred Lambert reported for Electrek.
Mercedes-Benz initiated the VISION EQXX project a few years ago to improve the efficiency of its electric vehicles. The vehicle has a 100-kWh battery pack, and while there are a few production electric vehicles with that capacity, none of them have a range of more than 500 miles.
Mercedes is testing new technology in the VISION EQXX to increase economy. It has various aerodynamic elements that help it attain a drag coefficient of 0.17.
In April, the test electric car traveled on the autobahn from Sindelfingen near Stuttgart, through the Swiss Alps and Northern Italy, to Cassis on the French Riviera. That was a journey of slightly over 620 miles (1,000 km), as the business aimed for 750 miles (1,200 km) of range before debuting the car in 2020.
Following its inaugural drive from Stuttgart to Cassis (France) in April, the research vehicle raised the bar even higher with a 1,202-kilometer journey from Stuttgart to Silverstone in the United Kingdom.
The VISION EQXX passed the French border at Strasbourg, then traveled across northern France at highway speeds to Calais, where it boarded the Eurotunnel, after negotiating an autobahn closure and demanding a cross-country diversion near Stuttgart.
