This was announced by MPIF president Melody del Rosario during the 15th-year celebration at Westin Hotel of the Shore It Up advocacy which emerged from the devastation caused by super typhoon Ondoy.
SIU started with a clean-up of debris in Anilao, Batangas following the typhoon’s wrath.
“We’ve Gone past becoming scubasureros," Del Rosario said, adding that the advocacy now “proudly boasts of two mangrove centers each in Luzon and Mindanao, eight eco-guides, 2,800 junior environmental scouts, over a hundred thousand partners and volunteers."
Now, Shore It Up is crafting a new “blue revolution” that could lead to a sustainable tourism program for the country that will lead to job creation, bring in the needed dollars for the country and level up the income of far-flung communities.
Del Rosario said the” private sector has a pivotal role to play in protecting the marine ecosystem and safeguarding the fragile balance of our oceans which is not only a moral obligation but also a crucial aspect of sustainable business practices and long-term economic viability for both the private sector and our nation .”
She also told the Shore It Up participants to provide for livelihood, create more blue carbon and help mitigate climate change for the next five years
“Let it be a call to action for individuals, businesses, and governments to unite and work together in preserving our beautiful shorelines and securing a brighter, more sustainable future.”
