Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has received approximately 5,500 pre-orders for its all-new Pajero sport utility vehicle in Japan, exceeding its sales target for fiscal 2026 ahead of the model’s Dec. 17 launch.

The automaker began accepting pre-orders on Oct. 1, with orders reaching about 5,500 units as of Oct. 28, according to the company’s Oct. 29 announcement.

The figure surpassed its annual sales target of 4,000 units for the fiscal year ending in March 2027.

The new model marks the return of the Pajero nameplate to Japan after a seven-year absence. Mitsubishi will offer four grades: Super Exceed, Exceed, GSR and GLS. Prices range from 6.193 million yen to 7.9508 million yen, inclusive of Japan’s 10% consumption tax.

The company will begin selling the SUV through Japanese dealerships on Dec. 17.

The new Pajero retains the off-road capabilities associated with the nameplate, featuring a high-rigidity ladder frame and a 2.4-liter clean-diesel turbo engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It also offers seven selectable drive modes designed for different road and driving conditions.

The SUV is manufactured in Thailand, where sales have already begun.

Mitsubishi also plans to introduce the model in Australia and expand its availability to approximately 100 countries from fiscal 2027, including markets in Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The Pajero debuted in 1982 and became one of Mitsubishi’s best-known off-road vehicle nameplates. It is marketed as the Montero in some countries.
