PNP COVID Death Toll Hits 106

Two more police officers have succumbed to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), raising the Philippine National Police's (PNP) death toll from the disease to 106.

In its update on Thursday, the PNP Health Service said Patient 105 is a 54-year-old policeman assigned in the Bicol Region, according to a PNA report.

He was admitted to a quarantine facility after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms on August 19. His swab test yielded a positive result on August 20.

On August 23, the police officer was transferred to the hospital due to difficulty in breathing and a decrease in oxygen level. On August 26, he succumbed due to acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Patient 106 was a 25-year-old patrolman assigned in the Ilocos Region. He was rushed to the hospital on August 24 due to difficulty in breathing. He was given medical treatment but was pronounced dead by his attending physician on the same day.

"A post-mortem examination and swab test were conducted which yielded a positive result. The deceased has received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine," PNP chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, said.

Meanwhile, the PNP Health Service recorded 219 recoveries, raising the number of recovered personnel to 32,844 out of a total of 34,972 cases. Another 219 new infections were also logged, bringing the active case count to 2,022.

Meanwhile, Eleazar announced that around 101,000 police personnel or 45 percent of the force have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Another 103,000 are waiting for their second dose.

"We are hoping that by the end of this month all PNP personnel will have already been vaccinated against the COVID-19," Eleazar said.
