In a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology on Thursday, March 25, 2021, scientists from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, among others, wrote that vaccinations are "highly effective" in producing antibodies in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

In the most comprehensive study on this topic to date, the researchers studied a total of 131 women: 84 pregnant, 31 breastfeeding and 16 neither pregnant nor breastfeeding - all given a Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. The resulting antibody levels were comparable in each of the three groups of women, they said. In addition, side effects were rare and also similar. The researchers also compared antibody levels during pregnancy after a coronavirus infection with those after vaccination and found the latter to be significantly higher. In addition, the scientists detected antibodies in umbilical cord blood and in samples of breast milk.

"This news of excellent vaccine efficacy is very encouraging for pregnant and breastfeeding women, who were left out of the initial Covid-19 vaccine trials," said Andrea Edlow of Massachusetts General Hospital.

She adds, "Filling in the information gaps with real data is key - especially for our pregnant patients who are at greater risk for complications from Covid-19."

Pregnant women who contract the coronavirus are at higher risk of severe Covid-19, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC.) The CDC does not advise pregnant women against vaccination and in many US states, pregnant women are given priority for vaccination.

In Germany, however, officials currently do not recommend the use of mRNA vaccines during pregnancy pending more research confirming it is safe.
