PSE Index Still Up

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index rose again despite volume being a third lower, with half of the sub-indices down and the other half up, to close at 6,672.69 points, a gain of 47.61 points or 0.72 percent.

Holding firms saved the day for the index as market bellwether SM Investments went up by 2.79 percent to P920, an increase of P25 with trades of P285 million, the second most active stock.


BDO Unibank lost P2 to P142, emerging as most active with trades of P295 million, while Metro Pacific lost 2 centavos to P4.41 as investors chewed the effect of its tender offer of P4.63.



Financials managed to squeak to a 0.05 gain even with the BDO decline as Bank of PI went up by P2.40 to P110, and Metrobank by 80 centavos to P59.40.


Property rose by 0.92 percent as Ayala Land rose by 85 centavos to P27.50, Robinsons Land, by 16 centavos to P14.58, and SM Prime closed unchanged at P33.95. Holdings rose by 1.45 percent.

Industrials, services, and mining and oil respectively lost 0.25 percent 0.11 percent and 0.48 percent. The index, opened a bit lower from Friday's close but had a low of 6,616.88 points and a high of 6,673.46 points.


Value turnover was a ghost of average with just p4. 08 billion, a third lower as investors remained unconvinced and stayed at the sidelines as the Federal Reserve watch on interest rate loomed with that of the Bangko Sentral's rate rise reaction.

Also, the inflation number is still awaited to determine if the core inflation rises, experts said.


PLDT went down by P3 to P1,201 while Globe Telecom rose by P20 to P1,720 as ICTSI was unchanged at P217. AgriNurture rose by 10 centavos to P7.35, Bloomberry went down by 28 centavos to P10.22, and Ayala Corp declined by P3 to P636.

Other trade highlights: Solar Philippines went up by 2 centavos to P1.48, Jollibee Foods, up by 60 centavos to P225.60, JG Summit, up by 50 centavos to P51.20, Monde, up by 17 centavos to P9.52, ACEN Corp, down by 4 centavos to P5.97, and Aboitiz Power was unchanged at P38.


There were 103 gainers, 83 losers, and 48 shares unchanged.
