This marks the latest identification in the ongoing effort spanning decades to return the remains of more than 1,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, as reported by Mainichi Shimbun.

Authorities confirmed the identification of a man and a woman just days ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the hijacked plane attack, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives in Lower Manhattan. Their identities have been withheld by city officials.

New York City's medical examiner has employed cutting-edge DNA sequencing techniques to connect remains to 1,649 WTC victims, a meticulous process involving body fragments recovered from the rubble.

Despite this milestone, over 1,000 human remains from the September 11, 2001 attacks remain unidentified. These remains are currently stored at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the WTC site.
