Rising Power Demand and Environmental Concerns Fuel Backlash Against AI Data Centers

The growing impact of artificial intelligence data centers on electricity demand and local communities is fueling a broader backlash against the technology and the infrastructure required to power it.

Last year, Elon Musk's xAI data center in Memphis, Tennessee, became the center of an environmental controversy after the company installed natural-gas turbines to generate electricity for its Colossus facility.
Residents and environmental groups raised concerns about air pollution from the turbines and their potential effects on nearby communities.
The concerns extend beyond individual facilities.
Data centers are placing growing demands on electricity systems, raising questions about who will ultimately pay for the additional power infrastructure needed to support the AI boom.
Environmental impacts are another source of concern.
A WIRED review of air-permit documents found that natural-gas projects associated with 11 US data-center campuses could potentially emit more than 129 million tons of greenhouse gases annually.
The projects are linked to major AI companies including OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft and xAI.
The estimate is based on permitted or proposed emissions from natural-gas power projects and does not mean that all 129 million tons will necessarily be emitted.
Actual emissions could be lower depending on how the facilities operate.
Public skepticism about AI is also becoming visible at universities.
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was repeatedly booed while discussing artificial intelligence during his commencement address at the University of Arizona in May. At the University of Central Florida, real-estate executive Gloria Caulfield was also booed after describing AI as "the next industrial revolution."
The reaction among gamers has provided another indication of resistance to AI.
An analysis of nearly 10,000 Steam game releases found that titles disclosing AI use received about 53% fewer reviews than comparable games after controlling for factors including developer experience, publisher backing, genre and release timing.
The findings do not mean that consumers universally reject AI.
Rather, they point to growing skepticism about some of the technology's consequences, including its effects on employment, energy consumption, the environment and creative industries.
As AI companies expand their computing infrastructure, the debate is increasingly shifting from what AI can do to who pays for its expansion—and what environmental and social costs communities are willing to accept.
