Russia has recorded an all-time high of 808 deaths related to the coronavirus in one day, authorities said.

For weeks, the country has been reporting high death tolls despite a drop in the number of new infections. On Thursday, almost 22,000 new cases were registered nationwide, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.
The more contagious Delta variant is spreading rapidly in Russia. According to the latest official figures, just under 27 percent of the population of around 146 million have had at least one vaccination jab.
The Sputnik V vaccine has already been on the Russian market for a year.
Nevertheless, there is widespread vaccination skepticism in the country. According to official statistics, more than 168,000 people have died from COVID-19 in Russia so far. It is assumed that the number of unreported cases is higher.
