Shenzhen Clobbered By New COVID-19 Outbreak

Two years after the COVID-19 lockdowns in the United States and persistent denials by China that it was the epicenter of the pandemic that started in Wuhan, Beijing has been zapped anew by recurring cases, particularly in the industrial hub of Shenzhen, CNN Business reported.

China is seeing its worst COVID spread since the original outbreak in Wuhan in late 2020. In the southeastern city Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong, virtually all businesses have suspended operations or implemented work-from-home policies. Public transportation is halted.

The number of cases in China is relatively small, but the country is still aggressively pursuing a zero-COVID strategy. Shenzhen, a city of 17.5 million people, went on lockdown after just 86 cases were detected. Across China, there are just over 2,100 reported cases. The US, by comparison, had more than 34,000 cases.
